One of the highlights of our trip to Canada was getting out of the city of Vancouver and catching a ferry to Vancouver Island for a few days. We took our hire car on the ferry from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, a three hour or so crossing. Instead of heading south to Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, we went north for 350km and stayed in Port McNeill.

For me, the best bit was a whale watching trip whilst the worst was getting food poisoning and missing out on a trip to Alert Bay and the Kwakwaka’wakw village there. My other disappointment was the weather. Whilst mainland basked in sunshine, the island attracted a lot more cloud and dampness. My desire to take some nightime photos well away from light pollution didn’t get out of the motel. The wildlife on the other hand was amazing as I hope the following photos show.

Instead of heading over to Alert Bay, I took a gentle stroll around town with my camera. It was nice to see the flowers and the bees.
